Emerald shiners in stock.- Stop in on your way out to the lake and get em while they are available.  Starting to hear decent reports of perch bite out on lake erie.

Looks like the cold nights have the water down into the 5os,  this has the fish starting to think about fattening up for the winter.  Saugeye, resident walleye , steelhead , and the rare chinook salmon have all been pulled out of the river in the last few days. With this weekend looking to be pretty nice it might be a great time to head out and give it a try.

We have had a lot of questions over the last couple days about the Chinook salmon and steelhead that are caught here in our Maumee  River -here is a little information from the Ohio department of natural resources to answer a few of those questions.

“Chinook or king salmon are the largest of the pacific salmon species.

Chinook salmon are a large silver fish with black spots on their back and entire tail. Like all members of the Salmonidae family they have an adipose fin. Chinook salmon have black gums and spawning fish in the Great Lakes turn a muddy brown in color. These large spawning fish are sometimes referred to as “mud sharks”. Mature males develop a hooked upper jaw called a kype. Chinook salmon are in the Salmonidae family with other salmon, trout, char, and whitefish. In Ohio waters, adults chinooks are usually 25-35 inches long, sometimes up to 45 inches, and 5-20 pounds, sometimes up to 40 pounds. But in their natural range on the west coast, ocean-going salmon can reach 55 inches and exceed 100 pounds. Chinook salmon travel long distances up rivers from the Pacific Ocean to spawn in their natural range. After spawning they die. In the Great Lakes, introduced populations are maintained by stocking young fish.”
